Discovering Indonesian skincare - Avoskin Review & Showcase

What a surprise to see an Indonesian skincare brand collaborating with Picky! Today, let's talk about Avoskin. I've never heard about this brand before and was rather curious about it. I was lucky enough to be chosen to review a few products from their Miraculous line, let's jump right in!

In this article, I'll be reviewing four Avoskin products that were sent to me -

Avoskin

Official Website - https://www.avoskinbeauty.com/

Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/AvoskinID

Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/avoskinbeauty

Shopee - https://shopee.com.my/avoskinofficial.os

💖 To-know before you read my skincare reviews 💖

- I live in Malaysia (tropical, humid and hot af climate)

- I have dry to very dry skin

- My main issues with skin revolves around closed comedones and fungal acne

First Impression

When I received the package, I was rather taken aback by the huge layer of bubble wrap. Sent via FedEx, it also came with a thick stack of documents that talked about the details of the products.

Inside the Avoskin box were four products - their Miraculous Retinol Toner 100ml, three of their Miraculous Retinol Sheet Masks, and two minis - Perfect Hydrating Treatment Essence 30ml and The Great Shield Sunscreen 5ml.

In the event post, Picky had actually used photos of full-sized Avoskin products, hence when we received minis, the majority of us were rather confused. Not going to lie, I also felt rather upset as we were expected to review a 5ml sunscreen, come on. Picky later clarified that the products we received were correct and that it was a mistake on their end.

So let's just say that my first impression on the brand wasn't a good one due to the misunderstanding. No matter who's in the wrong, I just hope this never happens again because it made me very disappointed in both the brand and Picky.

Review

This is actually my first time trying retinol products. I've had retinol in some products before, but since it's not of a high percentage, prominent results were rarely seen. This is a mild and gentle retinol toner that's suitable for beginners ✨ It has a rather viscous texture and the product tends to foam up between your palms if you rub it.

The viscosity adds an additional layer of hydration for me 💧👍, but it may be a little heavy for oily skin. It will take some time to absorb - doesn't really dry down that fast on me. It also has a very prominent retinol scent that's not very pleasing 😬 Because it's mild, you may need to use it in the long-term to see noticeable effects.

I'm giving it a 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ as it's a nice non-comedogenic toner at a reasonable price. It may not be as powerful as other retinol-focused products, but for a beginner, this fits just nice into my night routine.

Review

I have no idea how this is fragrance-free, my god, the scent of this is just, awful. You'll be able to smell it the moment you open the glass bottle - a floral scent with hints of alcohol. I really love the packaging of this, the frosted glass feels very heavy and luxurious, but then it's not very practical as the texture of the essence is rather viscous and I found it difficult to dispense the product through the 'toner' type of opening.

Initially, the essence itself feels cooling and refreshing on the skin ❄️, the viscosity gives an extra layer of hydration to my dry skin 💧. But after several uses, I noticed that it makes my skin feel tight after it dries down. I don't know the reason behind it, it just made me feel a little skeptical about the product. The hydration also doesn't seem to last very long unfortunately.

I'm giving this a 3.5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨. Even though I really want to like this as it's non-comedogenic and hydrating, the fact that it makes my skin feel tight afterwards makes me a little worried. It's formulated with alcohol at the bottom of the list, but the brand had also stated that the alcohol they used in the formulation is fatty alcohol that allows for better absorption of other ingredients and is effective at softening the skin.

If you're like me and you can tolerate fragrance as long as the product works, I think you should be able to handle this product. Do also note that I'm reviewing this based on a 30ml mini. Better alternatives are definitely available especially at this price.

Review

This was the product that I was skeptical about as we needed to review with a 5ml mini. And guess what I noticed when I wondered why the product was so light?

Yikes 😬. Well, according to some people - 'free stuff is free stuff', but that doesn't make this okay, especially when we're writing reviews for the brand in return. So was I happy? Not at all, but I will still give my unbiased review on the product.

On initial use, a transparent solvent came out before the product during the first squeeze 😬. As much as that may mean product separation, I just mixed it in and used it anyway. This SPF50 PA++++ sunscreen spreads well on my dry skin but it has a rather noticeable white cast. It can be blended into the skin but if you layer it, the white cast will be there.

This also has the typical SPF scent and a rather tacky finish. It does not minimize the appearance of hyperpigmentation as claimed. I also get a shiny T-zone if I pair this with heavy moisturizers, especially those with oils in them (jojoba oil, castor oil, etc), so this may end up being a little greasy for other skin types.

Overall, I give it a 3.5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨. I would still finish this 5ml mini, but it's not something I will repurchase. It's also not non-comedogenic, which means that there are better alternatives on the market that will suit my needs better. Do also note that I'm writing this review based on a 5ml mini.

Review

Unfortunately, this sheet mask also gave me a really bad first impression. Why? Because this reeks of alcohol 🍾. It's fragrance-free, I have no idea why it smells this way. Maybe it's because of the formulation with retinol? 🤷🏼‍♀️

The liquid had a yellow-hue, the mask itself is super thin and I was unimpressed by the cotton quality 😒. The edges were irregular as if they weren't manufactured properly, it was also rather broad, but I could make do with it. You can see it briefly in the photo. While I was putting this on, it stung my lips (I have sensitive lips) which led to some peeling afterwards 😬

Performance-wise, this was decent - leaving my skin feeling refreshed, plump and even giving me slightly brightened skin 👍. Overall I'd give this a 3/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️, I would not use this for a self-pampering night as the scent is not enjoyable for me but I can definitely see myself using this for the instant skin-brightening boost if I need it.

Personally I feel like a sheet mask should be enjoyable since if you're more into the performance of a product, other skincare steps would definitely give you better results instead of splurging regularly on sheet masks - which isn't eco-friendly or cost-efficient 🤷🏼‍♀️

TL;DR - Too many better alternatives available

Here's my personal ratings for the experience!

(5/10)

Unfortunately, I don't really like most of the products that I've tried. I still gave these products a moderate rating, but overall I won't repurchase most of them as there are too many better alternatives available on the market. The toner and the essence that worked for me have other downsides - such as the unpleasing fragrance or scent.

If you're someone that has a high tolerance for fragrance which is a very personal preference, you should still enjoy some of these products. But in my opinion, there are too many better alternatives available on the market.

Have you tried anything from Avoskin? Let me know your thoughts and feel free to suggest me any that you think might suit my dry skin!
